Traditionally, Mothering Sunday was a Christian holiday; a time when whole families got the chance to gather together and attended Mass together. This was a special day because it used to be very difficult for whole families to get together, especially when they were employed as servants in wealthy households, Mothering Sunday was the only day they were allowed to take off.

Mother’s Day has been a much more recent creation from the USA, emerging in the early twentieth century. It was created by American, Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for the creation of the day in 1905, the year her own mother died. By 1914, the US President, Woodrow Wilson, formally recognized that day, officially assigning it to the Second Sunday of May. The popularity of the holiday was quickly realized by confectionery companies and Hallmark, although Jarvis was not happy about this.

Due to the success of the new holiday in the US, and the increasing secularization in the UK, Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day became synonymous, particularly during the Second World War.

The most important aspect of this day, though, is to remember all the wonderful things our mothers do for us. They deserve to be thanked and honored, which is why we have an extensive collection of bouquets and arrangements that are perfect for saying: “Thank you Mum, and I love you”.

So don’t forget, Mother’s Day is on 15th March this year. Be prepared and order your Mum’s flowers today!
